The worldwide online community for boaters.
Well I haven't been on here much but I thought I'd go ahead and start a discussion. Not quite sure this is the right place for it but oh well.
If anyone has read my profile I'm new to the sailing community. I may not be the most experienced sailor, but I have read just about every book there is on the subject and I think about being on the water daily. I have spent two years in Iraq working and putting some money away for my next adventure. A few years back in between jobs, I bought a 25' C&C sloop. I lived on it for about 3 months sailing from Tampa and all around Florida with most of my time spent in the Keys and the Marquesas. On that boat I learned so much and new this was the life for me. Anyways, I sold that boat and came back here to Iraq to work another contract. In 2 months I'll be leaving here and I think it's time to move on and take a break from all this and enjoy myself....which is the topic of my discussion.
I plan on an extended trip on my next boat. I'm aiming for 2 or 3 years.....where exactly I don't know but would love to hit the south pacific and get lost for a while. I know what I want in a sailboat. I want something seaworthy with a strong hull and something that's relatively fast. I would like a sloop/cutter rig, something between 32 and 38 feet. I would like a full keel. I'll be sailing single-handed. I like simple. From everything I read it is the way to go, and it just makes sense to me. If you knew how I lived here in Iraq you would understand. I don't need anything fancy or pretty. I have some money now but would like to buy a sea-worthy boat without all the fancy stuff at a reasonable price and use my money for traveling and for any needs that come up. I don't need roller furling but I wouldn't remove it if the boat was already equipped with it. I plan on using a sextant but will of course have a gps for back-up. I don't want refrigeration, just an icebox. I want a wind generator and solar panels. I like wheel steering, but would really prefer the simplicity of tiller steering. I want wind powered self-steering gear. Like I said, nothing fancy.
I know there are a million different ideas about what someone wants in a sailboat or what everyone thinks is best. This is what I've come up with and will probably stick pretty close to what I want. I would like to have anyone's opinion on what boat you think might fit this description. I wish there was a service I could hire that would look through all the sailboat classifieds, find a good deal, hire an inspector to check it out....and then let me know. Not a bad business I don't think.
Anyway....if anyone has anything to add let me know. Just thought I'd ask. Thanks in advance for the help.
